Personal Background: Atiba Jefferson was born in 1976 in Colorado Springs, CO. He first picked up a camera in high school and later merged his two interests of skateboarding and photography. He first sent his work to the famous Transworld Skateboarding Magazine. After rising to higher positions within the company Jefferson decided to start his own magazine Called the Skateboard Mag which has now become a huge success in the skating world. Even though he never attended college Jefferson has been able to create a successful career in photography.
Style: Jefferson's style relies heavily on bold colors to help create awe in the viewer. The way he captures movement shows the concentration and difficulty of each trick being performed. To some degree every image Jefferson takes is staged because prior to the shot he scouts out the location to make sure there aren't many people around. This is because almost all of the places Jefferson shoots don't allow skateboarding, meaning he could be arrested when taking his photos.
Philosophy: Atiba Jefferson's philosophy is that things happen for a reason. And may it be fate or may it just be the way things are he believes that everything happens for a reason. This is how he captures his pictures. Creating drama with color and contrast he is able to expand the singular moment of movement for the view into something that last for a long time. Each shot he believes was in some way or another meant to be.
Influences: As a pioneer of the skateboarding photography world Jefferson didn't have many people who influenced him. However, he was influenced by many in the sports photography world. Jefferson also is well known in the sports photography world. As a skateboard photographer he is an influence for many. I have been greatly influenced by the style of Jefferson's photos.
